QRD on the parties /beg2024 edition/ ================================================================================================== i'll start by introducing the "mafia" parties >BSP from 1946 to 1990, bulgaria was a communist country ruled by the "bulgarian communist party"-BKP the USSR was losing the cold war and soviet vassals were protesting, so USSR made reforms which allowed for more freedoms, including democracy many, like poland and ukraine, were happy with this, choosing to break up the USSR as well as forbid former communists from taking part in politics but in bulgaria people were not as excited, and in the first free election held, the winner with 47% of the vote was the communist party, now simply renamed to BSP-the "bulgarian socialist party". - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutions_of_1989#Bulgaria - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union#Perestroika_and_Glasnost_reforms_(1985%E2%80%931991) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lustration - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Bulgarian_Constitutional_Assembly_election >DPS from 1396 to 1878, bulgaria was ruled over by a muslim caliphate. we were liberated by revolutionaries in secret sociaties as well as the russian military. at the time of liberation, turks were around 20 to 25% of the population. over the years, and especially during communism, many of those turks were kicked out into turkey. at the time of the 1st free election, they formed a party, DPS-the "movement for rights and freedoms", and got 8% of the vote. someone (not sure who) made it legal for those expelled and their children to get bulgarian citizenship, and so they did, but still live in turkey. every election busses full of turks cross our border to vote in our elections, most probably paid for by the turkish government, so DPS can serve their interests. they've very often been part of the ruling coalitions, reguardless of who won the votes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exodus_of_Turks_from_Bulgaria_(1950%E2%80%931951) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Excursion - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Bulgaria#Demographic_policies >GERB-SDS with the fall of the USSR, lacking the ability to be self sufficiant, but not wanting to be enslaved by turks again, many pro-european parties were formed and then united into a party called SDS as i said, they rotated wins back and forth with BSP each election for 20 years until 2009, when SDS got only 6% of the vote. the winner of that election being a new party called GERB-"Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria". during communism, the leader of bulgaria was one Todor Jivkov, he had a bodyguard named Boyko Borisov. this Borisov was a communist party member before the fall, and from 2005 found himself to be the mayor of sofia. that borisov has from 2009 to today been the PM of GERB. winning several elections in a row for 12 years. it absorbed SDS in 2021, mostly for the prestige of the name. (borisov was also the bodyguard for simeon II, the rightful hair to the bulgarian throne) - https://web.archive.org/web/20170327161239/http://www.france24.com/en/20170326-boyko-borisov-bulgarias-mr-big ================================================================================================== now i'll describe the "protestor" parties and the recent events that led to where we are this is going to be the 6th election in 4 years >key: Revival, BSP- pro russia DPS- turkish monitory everyone else- pro west >election 1, 2021. turnout 49% GERB was elected in 2017 and finished their term normally however many people had been protesting and calling for an early resignation, as what would later become the party DB had uncovered corruption ties between GERB and DPS furthermore, a very popular late night show host throws his hat into politics, forming ITN another party was formed with just a provocative name "rise up! mafia out!" (IBG-NI), they too got above the 4% of votes minimum needed to get into parliament ITN was the big winner with 17%, DB- 9%, IBG-NI- 5%. the "mafia" meanwhile stood at GERB- 26%, BSP- 15%, DPS- 10% (for the bgs wondering, VMRO split from NFSB, forcing both to get under 4%) =---= to get such a high result however, ITN promised they would not make a coalition with the mafia parties. keeping their promise, we went to re-election - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%932021_Bulgarian_protests#Cause_of_protests >election 2, 2021 this time the results were ITN- 24%, DB- 13%, IBG-NI- 5% and GERB- 23%, BSP- 13%, DPS- 11% =---= the "mafia" supporters staying at home discouraged, and the protest parties were invigorated. they finally had the numbers to form a coalition however, DB accuses ITN of corruption with DPS, refuses and a new election is called, with DB believing they can overtake ITN and not have to share power >election 3, 2021 discouraged by the infighting, both ITN and DB voters looked for an alternative ITN- 9%, DB- 6%, ING-NI did not clear the 4% from this point on and GERB- 23%, BSP- 10%, DPS- 13% two new parties joined PP- 25%. made up of interim ministers appointed by the president wanted to "continue the change" (literally their name) Revival- 5%. a "pro-russian" party which had been growing in support over the past elections despite not clearing the 4% and thus being mostly ignored by the media =---= PP, DB, ITN and BSP form a coalition. ITN breaking their word they don't get along, as PP & DB want to send weapons to ukraine, and BSP does not. and PP & DB want to make concessions to get n.macedonia into EU, and ITN does not ITN refuses to recognize a "macedonian" identity and withdraws support, forcing another election >election 4, 2022 ITN seen as unreliable, the people withdraw support PP also drops, possibly because of aggressive pro-ukraine stance revival sees a boost now that the media can't ignore them PP- 20%, DB- 7% Revival- 10%, BSP- 9% GERB- 25%, DPS- 13% a new party is formed and shilled hard, does not elaborate on their stances, some fall for it. BV- 5% =---= PP & DB stay true to their word to not make a coalition with GERB or DPS (somehow BSP no longer considered mafia now that they already had a coalition with them) nobody else can form a coalition, thus, a new election >election 5, 2023. turnout 41% PP & DB support keeps falling. real risk of DB falling under 4%, thus, the two unite. not like they had any differences anyway PPDB- 24%, ITN- 4% Revival- 14%, BSP- 9% (a party splinters from BSP and steals around 2%) GERB- 25%, DPS- 13% =---= PPDB sees the writing on the wall, and breaks their promise, forming a coalition with the mafia GERB to "keep the russians out" they agree to rotate the prime ministership every 9 months and only shuffle the cabinet if agreed. the time for the shuffle is now, GERB went back on their word and attempted to force a cabinet shuffle, knowing PPDB would suffer credibility either way. PPDB has refused the cabinet shuffle, even though they have no political disagreements with GERB i should note that DPS has been constantly voting together with both PPDB and GERB, despite them supposedly refusing to work together - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYEPy3F70TM >election 6, 2024 2 in 1 with EU parliament -you are here- .
